Carta responsiva for a car sale: what it is and how to write one

What the carta responsiva must include when buying or selling a used car, and what it does not cover even when signed.

The carta responsiva documents the handover of the car and establishes from what moment each party is responsible. It does not replace the invoice or the ownership change, but without it, any fine or incident after the sale becomes a word-against-word dispute.

The details that cannot be missing

Name, address, and ID of both parties; the vehicle’s make, model, year, color, plates, and VIN; price, payment method, delivery date and time; mileage and general condition at the moment of sale.

Sign it at the right moment

It is signed when the vehicle and payment change hands, in two originals — one for each party. Attach a copy of the seller’s ID and, if possible, of the payment receipt.

Understand its limits

The carta responsiva does not transfer ownership: the endorsed invoice and the official ownership change do. Treat it as the documentary bridge while you complete the paperwork, not the destination.

Fast workflow

  1. 1Fill in both parties’ and the vehicle’s details, including VIN and plates.
  2. 2Record price, date, mileage, and delivery conditions.
  3. 3Sign two originals and attach ID copies.

Buyer checklist

  • VIN and plates match invoice and registration card
  • Price and payment method in writing
  • Two signed originals, one per party
  • Ownership change scheduled after signing

Turn the checklist into an inspection
