Re-stamped VIN (NIV remarcado)

A serial number re-engraved to hide the vehicle’s original identity, typical of stolen or cloned cars.

What it means

A re-stamped VIN (NIV remarcado) is a serial number altered or re-engraved over the original. It gives stolen cars a “clean” identity, sometimes copying the VIN of another legal vehicle (cloning).

Why it matters

Buying a car with a re-stamped VIN can cost you the entire vehicle: if the authority detects it, the car is seized without reimbursement and you would have to prove your good faith.

What to check

  • Locate the VIN in at least two spots (windshield, door frame, engine) and confirm they are identical.
  • Look for welds, rivets, fresh paint, or irregular lettering around the stamping.
  • Cross-check the VIN with REPUVE and the invoice before leaving any deposit.

Turn the checklist into an inspection

Upload vehicle photos and documents to get condition, market, and legal context in one AutoBuddy report.
