Odometer rollback

An odometer manipulated to show less use than real; one of the most common used-car scams.

What it means

An odometer rollback (kilometraje alterado) happens when the odometer is manipulated to show fewer kilometers than real to justify a higher price. On digital dashboards it is done with diagnostic equipment.

Why it matters

A car with more use than declared is worth less and is closer to major maintenance. You would pay a well-kept-car price for a worn vehicle.

What to check

  • Compare wear on the steering wheel, pedals, shifter, and seats against the declared mileage.
  • Ask for service and emissions-check history: kilometers should grow consistently.
  • Distrust unusually low figures on cars with several years of daily use.

Turn the checklist into an inspection

Upload vehicle photos and documents to get condition, market, and legal context in one AutoBuddy report.
